District Profile

The Benton Carroll Salem Local School District consists of three (3) schools:
R.C. Waters Elementary, Oak Harbor Middle School and Oak Harbor High School. We have an enrollment of approximately 1170 students.

The district includes Oak Harbor, Graytown, Rocky Ridge, Carroll Twp., Benton Twp., Erie Twp., and Salem Twp.located in Ottawa County.

Opportunities Abound for Students at B-C-S:

"If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door," said Milton Berle.  Bobby Unser noted, "Success is where preparation and opportunity meet."   I am sure that you can think of your own favorite quote or saying about opportunity.  At Benton-Carroll-Salem Schools, we are constantly on the look out for new opportunities to meet our mission, and provide our students with a future filled with great options.  We are not only focused on future opportunities, but opportunities for the present moment.
The investment in our wireless internet infrastructure along with the purchase of new computers (Chromebooks) in grades K--7 have opened new doors for students and teachers.  At Oak Harbor High School, we are establishing a 1 to 1 computer initiative for 8th graders that allows students to take district computers home with them if they pay an insurance fee.  Pending our finances, we look for this initiative to include all high school students in the coming years.  These investments allow our teachers to harness the power of technology to improve teaching methods, and to gain more academic growth during a school year.  For example, technology can help a teacher better understand when a group of students "gets it" when teaching a new concept so that the teacher can either slow down and re-teach, or quickly move on to the next concept.  For B-C-S Schools, technology is not just a shinny toy, but a tool that is becoming an integral part of the teaching and learning process.  I often hear myself saying that today a strong wireless internet signal is just as essential as having electric service.
Just in the past year, we have expanded our offerings for Advanced Placement (AP) coursework at the high school, created a computer coding elective, and established an art club.   We worked with the Ottawa County Business Advisory Council to provide students with paid internships in career fields they intend to pursue.  We have adopted new reading curriculum materials for grades K--6 to improve the teaching of reading, which is the foundation of all learning. Further, we have worked to improve the transition of students into Kindergarten into school so that these students can be best prepared for success.
We also continue to look for new opportunities to improve communications.  This past February, we unveiled an school district "app" that you can download for free on your smartphone.  To download it, search "Benton Carroll Salem LSD." The app pushes news and updates directly to your phone and makes our website mobile friendly. We know that informed and engaged families, students, and community members are one of the keys to our current and future success.
Together with all of our stakeholders, I look forward to opening up new doors of opportunities for our students in the 2017--2018 school year!
As always, please do not hesitate to communicate with me regarding your questions or concerns.  I really do welcome the opportunity to answer your questions, and to hear out your concerns.  Your feedback helps us to continuously improve.  You can email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. MONDAY

Good morning R.C. Waters!

Today is Monday, May 1, 2017

It’s “Motivational Monday.”  How are you motivated for this week?  I am motivated by many things today...it’s a new month, today is School Bus Driver Appreciation Day, it’s Staff Appreciation Week and it’s Principal’s Day!  What a great day and week we have ahead of us!

Birthdays

Tomorrow I will begin to share summertime birthdays!

Our Kindergarten friends will enjoy Foreign Language Day with students in the Spanish and German classes from the High School.  Have fun!

Wonderful Wednesday update... this week we are celebrating “Wear Tacky Day” by wearing mismatched clothes on Wednesday.  This will be fun!

It’s time for your PBIS reminder for today…for those students who attend tutoring either before or after school I have some helpful reminders for you about being respectful. You can be respectful during tutoring by keeping your hands, feet and personal objects to yourself, listening to the speaker and following their directions as well as using the right voice level at all times.  Make sure to raise your hand when you need something and walk wherever you go.  One more reminder - be kind, always.

Did you see the awesome prizes on the table this morning when you walked in? Would you like to try to win one of those prizes? All you have to do is Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Ready everyday! You can earn a green raffle ticket everyday this week to put in the bucket of your choice by making good choices. We hope to see you being helpful to others, walking in the halls quietly, using good manners, and keeping your hands and feet to yourself. Winners will be drawn next Monday morning. You can do this boys and girls! Let's finish strong!

Be Ready

Be Responsible

Be Respectful and do something amazing!

Now I will ask everyone to please stand tall and proud, place your right hand over your heart and join me in saying the Pledge of Allegiance.
