B-C-S Welcomes Military Families

Benton-Carroll-Salem School District has made a dedication to military-connected students and families to provide them resources and support.  The school has a staff point of contact for military students and families who serves as the primary liaison between them and the school.  The liaison completes professional development on special considerations for military students and families under federal law.  The liaison identifies and informs teachers of the military-connected students in their classrooms and the special considerations military families and students should receive.

The point of contact for each of the buildings are as follows:

RC Waters:  Laurel Byington

Oak Harbor Middle School:  Leigh Carroll

Oak Harbor High School:  Nick Lance

District Profile

The Benton Carroll Salem Local School District consists of three (3) schools:
R.C. Waters Elementary (grades K--3), Oak Harbor Middle School (grades 4--7) and Oak Harbor High School (grades 8--12). We have a total enrollment of approximately 1500 students.

The district serves students and families in the Village of Oak Harbor, Village of Rocky Ridge, as well as Benton, Carroll, and Salem Townships--all of which are located in Ottawa County.  The district is bordered to the north by Lake Erie.  The district also serves students from other areas through open enrollment.  The district consistently ranks in the top tier of academic performance in Ohio!

Opportunities Abound for Students at B-C-S:

"If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door," said Milton Berle.  Bobby Unser noted, "Success is where preparation and opportunity meet."   I am sure that you can think of your own favorite quote or saying about opportunity.  At Benton-Carroll-Salem Schools, we are constantly on the look out for new opportunities to meet our mission, and provide our students with a future filled with great options.  We are not only focused on future opportunities, but opportunities for the present moment.
The investment in our wireless internet infrastructure along with the purchase of new computers (Chromebooks) in grades K--7 have opened new doors for students and teachers.  At Oak Harbor High School, we are establishing a 1 to 1 computer initiative for 8th graders that allows students to take district computers home with them if they pay an insurance fee.  Pending our finances, we look for this initiative to include all high school students in the coming years.  These investments allow our teachers to harness the power of technology to improve teaching methods, and to gain more academic growth during a school year.  For example, technology can help a teacher better understand when a group of students "gets it" when teaching a new concept so that the teacher can either slow down and re-teach, or quickly move on to the next concept.  For B-C-S Schools, technology is not just a shinny toy, but a tool that is becoming an integral part of the teaching and learning process.  I often hear myself saying that today a strong wireless internet signal is just as essential as having electric service.
Just in the past year, we have expanded our offerings for Advanced Placement (AP) coursework at the high school, created a computer coding elective, and established an art club.   We worked with the Ottawa County Business Advisory Council to provide students with paid internships in career fields they intend to pursue.  We have adopted new reading curriculum materials for grades K--6 to improve the teaching of reading, which is the foundation of all learning. Further, we have worked to improve the transition of students into Kindergarten into school so that these students can be best prepared for success.
We also continue to look for new opportunities to improve communications.  This past February, we unveiled an school district "app" that you can download for free on your smartphone.  To download it, search "Benton Carroll Salem LSD." The app pushes news and updates directly to your phone and makes our website mobile friendly. We know that informed and engaged families, students, and community members are one of the keys to our current and future success.
Together with all of our stakeholders, I look forward to opening up new doors of opportunities for our students in the coming school year!
As always, please do not hesitate to communicate with me regarding your questions or concerns.  I really do welcome the opportunity to answer your questions, and to hear out your concerns.  Your feedback helps us to continuously improve.  You can email me at This email address is being protected from spambots.
